What is Permanent Makeup (PMU)?

Permanent Makeup or PMU, also known as permanent cosmetics, derma-pigmentation, micro-pigmentation, semi-permanent makeup and cosmetic tattooing, is a cosmetic technique which employs tattoos (permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eye-lining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids. It is also used to produce artificial eyebrows, particularly in people who have lost them as a consequence of old age, disease, such as alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, chemotherapy, or a genetic disturbance, and to disguise scars and hypopigmentation in the skin such as in vitiligo. It is also used to restore or enhance the breast's areola, such as after breast surgery, or to give an illusion of more hair volume to the scalp. - Wikipedia

How long does Permanent Makeup last? Does it fade or require any maintenance?

Permanent Makeup (PMU) typically lasts between 1 to 3 years, depending on various factors such as skin type, lifestyle, and how well you follow aftercare instructions. Over time, the pigment may naturally fade due to factors like sun exposure, skin exfoliation, and the body's natural processes.

To maintain the desired look, periodic touch-ups are recommended. Typically, a touch-up is done every 1 to 2 years, depending on how the pigment fades and personal preference.

Is Permanent Makeup safe? Are there any risks?

Permanent Makeup (PMU) is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and certified professional using high-quality, sterile equipment. The procedure involves using pigments to create the appearance of makeup, such as eyebrows, eyeliner, and lip color, and is performed in a controlled and hygienic environment.
However, like any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks and potential side effects to be aware of:

  • Infection: Although rare, infections can occur if proper hygiene practices and proper aftercare instructions are not followed. Ensure that your PMU artist uses sterile equipment and maintains a clean environment.

  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to the pigments or anesthetics used. It’s important to inform your technician of any known allergies or sensitivities.

  • Pain and Discomfort: Some level of pain or discomfort is common during and after the procedure, even with topical anesthetics.

  • Scarring: Improper technique or aftercare can lead to scarring. Following the aftercare instructions provided by your technician can help minimize this risk.

  • Color Changes: Pigments may change color over time due to factors like skin type, sun exposure, and natural aging. Regular touch-ups can help maintain the desired look.

  • Healing Process: The healing process involves some discomfort, swelling, and redness. This is normal but should be managed according to the aftercare instructions provided.

  • Results May Vary: Individual results can vary based on skin type, lifestyle, and adherence to aftercare instructions

By choosing a reputable and experienced PMU artist and following all pre- and post-procedure guidelines, you can significantly reduce these risks and achieve the best results.

Can I get Permanent Makeup if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, but it’s important to inform your Permanent Makeup artist about your skin sensitivity so they can adjust the treatment accordingly.

Who should not get Permanent Makeup?

Permanent Makeup (PMU) may not be suitable for everyone. Here are some individuals who should consider avoiding:

  • Pregnant or Nursing Women: Hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect the healing process and pigment retention.

  • Individuals with Certain Medical Conditions:

    • Diabetes

    • Hemophilia

    • Heart conditions (including pacemakers or defibrillators)

    • Bleeding disorders

    • Thyroid conditions (such as hypo- or hyperthyroidism, Graves Disease, Hashimoto’s)

    • Autoimmune disorders (such as lupus, frontal fibrosing alopecia, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis).

  • People with Allergies: If you have a known allergy to pigments or anesthetics used in PMU, it’s best to avoid the procedure.

  • Those on Certain Medications: Individuals taking medications that affect skin healing or increase bleeding (such as blood thinners).

    • Antiplatelet Drugs/Medications:

      • Triflusal (Disgren)

      • Prasugrel (Effient)

      • Ticagrelor (Brilinta)

      • Ticlopidine (Ticlid)

      • Dipyridamole (Persantine

    • Medications that Increase Bleeding:

      • Vitamin E Supplements

      • Ginkgo Biloba, Garlic, Ginseng Supplements

      • Aspirin

      • Ibuprofen

      • Naproxen

      • Certain Anticoagulants

      • Clopidogrel (Plavix)

      • Cilostazol (Pletal)

      • Vorapaxar (Zontivity)

      • Coumadin (Warfarin)

      • Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

  • Active Skin Infections or Conditions: If you have active skin infections, rashes, or conditions like eczema or psoriasis in the area where PMU will be applied, it’s important to address these issues first.

  • Unrealistic Expectations: If you have unrealistic expectations about the results or are looking for a temporary change, PMU might not be the best option.

Consulting with a qualified PMU artist or healthcare provider can help determine if PMU is appropriate for you and address any specific concerns or contraindications.

What should I do and How should I prepare for my Permanent Makeup appointment?

Avoid Botox, retinoids, exfoliants, and any harsh skincare treatments for several weeks. Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment. Make sure your skin is clean and free of makeup. Follow specific pre-treatment instructions provided by your PMU artist.

Does Permanent Makeup hurt?

Some discomfort (a minor and tolerable degree of scratching/pricking) is normal, but most clients find the procedure tolerable. Numbing creams are used to minimize pain. The treated area may feel slightly tender immediately after the procedure. This tenderness typically subsides within a few days post-treatment.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure varies depending on the type of PMU service and the technician's technique. Typically, it takes 1-4 hours.

Why do my brows look dark and bold? What can I expect during the healing process after my PMU procedure?

As a first-time customer, you may experience an awkward stage where your brows feel upsetting or embarrassing. Please don’t worry—this is completely normal. Right after your PMU procedure, your brows will appear darker, bolder, and more defined due to the fresh pigment and the skin's healing process. Over the next 7-14 days, the brows will soften, and the color will lighten significantly—typically by 20-40%. The bold shape will also become more refined as your skin heals.

The healing process usually takes about 1-2 weeks for the initial healing, with full results visible after a few weeks.

  • First Few Days: The area may be swollen, red, and tender. You might notice some oozing or crusting.

  • Days 3-7: Peeling and flaking are normal as the skin heals. Avoid picking at the area.

  • Week 1-2: The color may look darker initially, then lighten as it settles. Some itching and dryness are common.

  • Weeks 4-6: The final color becomes clear, and the area should be fully healed. A touch-up may be needed for best results.

Please refer to the detailed aftercare instructions on our page.

How should I care for my Permanent Makeup after the procedure?

Follow the aftercare instructions provided on our page, which usually include avoiding wetting the area, applying healing ointment, and not picking at scabs.

Can I wear makeup after Permanent Makeup?

It’s best to avoid makeup on the treated area until it has fully healed.

What’s the difference between Nanoblading(aka Nano Brows) and Microblading?

The main differences between microblading and nanoblading are the tools and techniques used. Nanoblading involves using ultra-fine needles, which cause less trauma to the skin compared to the manual blades used in microblading. This reduces the risk of infection and scarring, and the results are natural-looking with enhanced brows that last relatively long.

Nanoblading creates thinner, more precise strokes that seamlessly blend with natural brows. It is especially suitable for clients with thin eyebrow hairs or alopecia. It works best on dry and normal skin types, as the fine strokes are more resilient; however, it does take longer to complete.

Microblading, while slightly more affordable, uses a hand tool to create slightly thicker strokes. It’s a good option for a more enhanced look if precise detail isn’t a priority.

Will I need a touch-up? How long after the initial treatment should I get a touch-up?

Yes, a touch-up is often recommended to perfect the results and address any fading that occurs during the healing process. However, if you are satisfied with the results from your first session, you can choose to wait longer before scheduling a touch-up. Typically, a touch-up is scheduled 6-8 weeks after the initial treatment.

When can I resume normal activities?

Most clients can return to their normal activities right away, but avoid sweating, swimming, and sun exposure for a few weeks.

How much does Permanent Makeup cost?

Prices vary depending on the type of PMU service and the artist’s experience. The average procedure costs between $200 to $1000, It’s best to contact the studio for specific pricing.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation policies vary by studio, so be sure to inquire when booking your appointment. At Need Beauty Studio, we require at least 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. For more details, please refer to our Policy page.

I just had a tan treatment. When can I book my Permanent Makeup service?

It’s recommended to wait until your tan has fully faded before booking a Permanent Makeup (PMU) service. Ideally, you should wait at least 2-4 weeks after a tanning treatment to ensure that your skin is at its natural tone and that the pigment will apply evenly. This helps achieve the best and most consistent results with your PMU.

Can my existing Permanent Makeup be improved or updated?

This depends on the appearance and design of your previous Permanent Makeup and is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Please send clear pictures to needbeautystudio@hotmail for analysis. We’ll provide feedback based on the pictures and arrange a consultation if needed.
